The Extraction Series (2000- )

As a society, we confront and practice censorship in its many forms on a daily basis. It may be at a personal level with self-censorship, when we choose not to disclose relevant information about ourselves to avoid negative consequences. Political and corporate entities often control their image to the public by distorting information via omission of data published in the media. In any educational system there is the censorship of critical data in history books that could reflect in a negative way the image of a government.

Forms of censorship are forms of misinformation that foster erroneous concepts in our society.

The Extraction Series installations are formed by a group of playful extirpations of a paragraph from the book Joseph Kosuth Interviews, published in 1989 by Patricia Schwartz, in Stuttgart editions.

The texts derived from the original are pared down to change the meaning of Kosuth’s reflections on the nature of art, while at the same time recognizing the linguistic character of conceptual art. The texts offer a range of references on social and cultural issues in English and Spanish. All the texts from this series have been extracted from the same paragraph of less than 140 words.
